Gothic touch on Sabrina's debut album

Mainstream goth rock isn’t dead in the States, as is proved by debutante Sabrina, who has currently released her first album ”Euphoria”. Sabrina was born in Brussels, Belgium but moved to USA at an early age. In ”Euphoria” she uses a familiar gothic imagery, but the music somewhat resembles mainstream rock and pop. /Kalle Malmstedt

The April Tears' new label aim at January

Sara Gunnarsson of The April Tears at SAMA 2001.

Previously, we have published several News pieces on the delays of Swedish The April Tears new, second album "Consume Desire". Manager Carolina Eriksson now tells Release the album is scheduled for a definte January launch.
- It's mastered and ready since last January, key member Andreas Jismark says.
He is tired of all the delays and The April Tears have reached a state of "black, black humour".
- Hopefully, we can keep a more frequent record release tempo in the future. We want the next album to come out about one year after "Consume Desire". That's our plan, anyway. I think 4/5 of that album is already written.
This week, the band's new label Edel delivered the third single off "Consume Desire": "Hardcoming".
The CDM offers two extra songs and a video will be made, if initial reactions are positive. This is a song I heard on the phone a couple of years ago.
- "Hardcoming" as well as "Heart Shut Down" are both on "Consume Desire". They have been with us since 1996, because they are to strong to put aside. And both have gone through a number of phases and re-recordings, but finally we reached a perfect result.
The second April Tears album was initially named "Eyes Cold Kisses".
- If the album had been released back in 1997/98, we would have had a release tempo in Stone Roses class instead of Kraftwerk, he laughs.
We might want to release ten or so songs from back then in the future.
In further News, a Canadian artist has made own versions of April Tears songs, to be released next Spring. /Mikael Kahrle

Best of Morrissey album in November
According to Billboard, a best of Morrissey album will be released in the US by Rhino on November 6. "The Best of Morrissey" will feature 21 tracks, spanning over the ex-Smiths frontman's solo career. The track listing includes classic songs like "Everyday Is Like Sunday" and "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful". It is also said that the booklet will include the lyrics of each track, a new interview with Morrissey as well as rare photographs.
The compilation was produced with Morrissey's "blessing and assistance". Perhaps the release can serve as an intermission for fans, who have been waiting for new material since the 1997 album "Maladjusted". No new material with Morrisey is expected to appear soon. /Peter Takizawa

A new goth band in town

There’s a new goth metal-band in town and they're called Madrigal. The town is Gothenburg, famous for ”the Gothenburg sound” of death metal.
- Everyone thinks we play death metal just because we’re from Gothenburg. But we don’t, says Marcus Bergman, the drum player of the band.
- Our influences are more of the symphonic kind, Kristoffer Sundberg, guitar, states.
Maybe. But if you like Paradise Lost and Anathema before they began their experimenting, Madrigal's brand new debut album ”I Die, You Soar” may be your kind if music. /Kalle Malmstedt

Alphaville launches remix album and competition
Too old to rock? Let others do it for you. That might be how the German synthpop legends Alphaville reasoned with the recent release of the remix album "Forever Pop". The album was released this Monday, October 22, in GAS (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), Czech Republic and in Slovakia. It contains mixes of their classic hits such as "Forever Young", "Big in Japan" and "Sounds Like a Melody". Among the remixers we can find Paul van Dyk, Georg Kaleve and José Alvarez Brill, known for his work with Wolfsheim, as well as a host of other names.
In conjunction with the release of the remix album, a competition has also been launched. It might be of interest for our musically creative readers. The goal of the competition is to make a remix of "Forever Young" with tools and samples provided by the competition holders. The main prize is a trip to Berlin and a meeting with Alphaville. Unfortunately the competition seems to be limited to residents in Germany only, for more information, see this site: www.foreverpop.de. /Peter Takizawa
