The Cure goes global again

Aug 14 2007 | By: Alex Veronac (Geneva, Switzerland)

The UK band that was to break up after their last tour over a decade ago is still at it with vigor. The Cure has competed live gigs in Japan and is to play Australia and New Zealand before tackling USA and Canada starting September 13. Just announced are two shows in Mexico City set for October 21 and 22 as tour's end. Band 65 Days of Static will be opening most shows.

The Cure's Robert Smith has been a spokesperson for Amnesty International's "Music for Human Rights" campaign. The Cure and others have donated music profits to the cause as well as participating in eBay auctions for The Cure concert tickets. More info here.

Nivek Ogre + Paris Hilton = true?

Aug 13 2007 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden)

Some crazy rumours from www.bloody-disgusting.com tell us that there's a new horror movie coming, starring both Nivek Ogre and Paris Hilton! Whoa, I didn't see this one coming, I can tell you that.

The movie in question is the horror-musical "Repo! The Genetic Opera" which starts filming on September 10, directed by a fella named Darren Lynn Bousmann. It's supposed to hit theatres on April 25, 2008.

The movie has a web site too: http://www.repoopera.com/.

Skinny Puppy, Jesus and Mary Chain and Deine Lakaien play M'era Luna this weekend

Aug 8 2007 | By: Sören Jensen (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Deine Lakaien at M'era Luna 2005.

Next item on the list of interesting European festivals is M'era Luna, being held i Hildesheim, Germany, on August 11-12. With approximately 25 000 visitors, it is one of the major festivals strictly focused on music that typically attracts Release readers, and throughout the years they have managed to present a very appealing selection of artists. This year is not different!

Skinny Puppy makes their second visit to the festival, as part of their mini tour of Europe. Deine Lakaien brings their 20 year anniversary tour there as well, supported by the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Frankfurt. And from the past, we find The Jesus and Mary Chain on German ground for the first time in eight years, while Tool is a slightly unexpected booking. Then there's Assemblage 23, Covenant, And One, My Dying Bride, Suicide Commando, Welle:Erdball, as well as 29 more acts of various degrees of fame.

Stand by for a report next week.

More "Disco" from Pet Shop Boys

Aug 8 2007 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden)

The next installment in the Pet Shop Boys "Disco" series is the appropriately named "Disco 4". This time the boys focus on their remixes for other artists, such as The Killers, Madonna, Rammstein, David Bowie etc. A new remix for "Integral" is included as well. Rumours that "Integral" will be a single are not true, by the way. However, a DJ promo with the new remix mentioned above will be sent out, and a music video has been made, promoting their view on ID cards in the UK.

Universal Poplab: live and third album

Aug 8 2007 | By: Mikael Kahrle (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Synthpop trio Universal Poplab are making plans for their third album. In a few days, they head for a studio in Denmark.

In October, they will release a bunch of remixes of songs from their last album called "Uprising - The Remixes".

Last weekend, Universal Poplab performed outdoors in front of 1200 people in Smögen (in the Bohuslän archipelago, Sweden). The surplus was given to the homeless in Gothenburg. In a few weeks the guys will do their first gig in Russia (in St Petersburg).

Terror Punk Syndicate releases debut album

Aug 7 2007 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden)

Mark September 19 in your calendar, because that's when Progress Production's promising new act Terror Punk Syndicate releases the debut album "Extended Playtime". It will be available as both a regular CD and limited double-disc. The sound harks back to the old-school Wax Trax! sound, but if you don't take my word for it, you can download three complete songs here.

The German EBM festival Familientreffen was held last weekend, and a surprising Swedish guest did a secret gig there. Project-X jumped on stage to everyones surprise, and they also played two new songs. Which neatly leads me into the next part of this piece of news, namely that they are close to finishing a new album. The trio of Torny Gottberg, Mattias Werdenskog and Jouni Ollila enters the studio next week to record it.
