Sonar and Might Boosh mini reports

July 30, 2008 | By: Mike Whyte (London, UK)

Yazoo at Sonar.

London writer Mike Whyte reports from two festivals he's been to recently: Sonar headlined by Yazoo and Mighty Boosh headlined by Gary Numan.

Sonar came in all its glory, the headliners being some of the coolest acts to perform in recent years. A reformed Yazoo on the Saturday evening proved to be a must-see for many. Also there were appearances by Goldfrapp, Madness, Roisin Murphy and Soulwax for those lucky enough to attend this 15th Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Arts in the glorious heat of Barcelona.

Personal favourites proved to be some of the more eclectic acts, performing earlier in the day. Daedelus rocked out a killer set, using some of the newest handheld electronic equipment available to create a glorious cacophony of mangled sound. Kid Acne was also well received by the festival massive, with their North East England via LA raps. Matmos also provided sonic entertainment of the highest standard.

To follow on from that musical feast came a return to the UK, and a visit to the Mighty Boosh festival. For those who don't know, the Mighty Boosh is a modern cult comedy programme in the UK, and this was the first festival ever to be headlined (and held) by a comedy act. Before you start to get confused as to why I am talking about this here – one simple reason – Gary Numan.

In amongst the comedy entertainment there were some real electronic music artists to take note of; Har Mar Superstar, doing his usual energetic crazy dancing and striptease show; a champagne-toasted DJ set from the irrepressible Peaches; and then one of the highlights of the day. Gary Numan played a very well-received set, which proved to be a journey through his back catalogue. Thanks to the electro crowd there were majestic airings of “Cars” and “Are Friends Electric”, something that should make non-festival goers feel suitably jealous at this moment.

Simple Minds anniversary tour with retro tunes

July 16, 2008 | By: Tobias Eliasson (Gothenburg, Sweden)

During June Simple Minds entered a studio in Glasgow in order to start work on their next album, the follow-up to ”Black & White 050505” released in 2005. At first the band once again had the original 1981 line-up, but this collaboration has ended. During the recording and upcoming shows the band will have the same members as usual these days. However, we still hope that the short visit from former members will lead to a change in the Simple Minds sound as the early work from the band was, although grandiose, classic synthpop.

According to the band they may already have enough quality material for two albums. They will also embark on a small UK/Ireland tour this autumn celebrating the band's 30th anniversary where they will perform the “New Gold Dream” album along with other retro tunes.
