JAKALOPE
IT DREAMS
ALBUM ORANGE, TMC RELEASE: JANUARY 3, 2005, JUNE (SWEDEN) REVIEW: JUNE 23, 2005

It feels kind of sad, writing about such a luke warm musical project as Jakalope after having witnessed Trent Reznor and his Nine Inch Nails on stage at the Hultsfred Festival. You see, Mr Reznor is involved in this alternative/industrial outfit, if you by chance have slept on that fact. And, yes you may have missed out on this too: Jakalope is boring. Boring. Boring I say!
Producer Dave Oglivie (Skinny Puppy!) has put together a band consisting of singer Katie B, three members from Canadian group Sons of Freedom and himself, bringing in pal Trent Reznor among others. An industrial super group? Nah.
What Mr Oglivie has managed to produce is a record reminiscent of early 90's industrial music, with a pop twist to it. Competent? Yes. Exciting? Hell no. Possibly one could say that first song "Feel it" - with that Reznor touch - is a good song, but apart from that "It Dreams" is a long night where you cannot remember anything that went trough your head, save from a few tracks like "Go Away" and "Pretty Life". And that is stretching it a bit. Maybe Oglivie thinks the line "Skinny little dogs barking up the wrong tree" in "Baddream" is a kick against former collaborators Skinny Puppy, but to me the whole of "It Dreams" sounds like someone barking up the wrong tree of all trees.
Yes, it feels sad. We all know Oglivie and Reznor both can do better than this.
