Pet Shop Boys writes two songs for West End Girls

Jan 15, 2008 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden)

One West End Girl.

Swedish Pet Shop Boys tribute band West End Girls has been working on their second album, and now some interesting news comes our way. Pet Shop Boys themselves have written two songs for the girls. One of the songs is called "A Little Black Dress" and supposedly sounds like a cross between Pet Shop Boys, West End Girls and Depeche Mode. "A Little Black Dress" was part of Pet Shop Boys' musical "Closer to Heaven" but never released. Both PSB tracks will be singles, but the first single will be a version of "What Have I Done To Deserve This", which comes out in February or March.

One interesting thing about this single is that Magnus Carlsson from Weeping Willows will sing on it. Other guests will feature on the album, but they're secret for now.

The album is called "Shoplifters" by the way. Pretty clever.

Chandeen returns with Technoir vocalist after five years

Jan 14, 2008 | By: Peter Marks (Portland, Oregon, USA)

"Teenage Poetry" (Kalinkaland) will be out March 28 and is the first new studio album from Germany's Chandeen in over five years. This work is sure to be noticed due to the inclusion of a new vocalist: Ms. Julia Beyer (Technoir). Unfortunately, neither Antje Schulz nor Caitrin Mallon appear to be part of this return. A taster of the album entitled "From the Inside" can be previewed at the band's Myspace. Live appearances are also being kept close to the vest but a special vinyl edition of the album is planned to be made available.

Chandeen are often credited with the creation of the "heavenly voices" style and originally existed as a four piece who split in 1994 after the release of the band's second album "Jutland". Oliver Henkle and Caitrin Mallon both emerged from the split under the moniker of Edera, releasing one album in 1995 before vanishing. Harald Lowy and Antje Schulz soldiered on with a new vocalist Stephanie Harich to release two additional albums in the 1990:s before slimming to just a duo for their final album "Echoes".

No more printed Side-Line due to viral cardiac attack

Jan 10, 2008 | By: Mikael Kahrle (Gothenburg, Sweden)

We are shaken after hearing that in December, publisher of Belgian Side-Line magazine Seba Dolimont was the victim of a viral cardiac attack. The Side-Line team has come to immediate conclusion to let his baby, the 60 issue old magazine, sleep.

Release and Side-Line have been publishing similar magazines for many years. Side-Line started in 1989, Release in 1986. We stopped to publish the printed Release (which was in Swedish) in 1998 and stress issues was certainly part of the picture for us as well.

We too, decided not to sell the magazine or explore some similar risky option. And just as Side-Line, we chose to focus on the web.

Side-Line will always be remembered as an important supporter for our music.

Full statement here.

Elegant Machinery comeback single moved to February 1

Jan 4, 2008 | By: Mikael Kahrle (Gothenburg, Sweden)

The News section is back from the holidays with the first 2008 entry. Now, between seasons, it's relatively calm but that will change soon. We're always scanning for the News stories.

Out of Line reports that the new Elegant Machinery single "Feel the Silence" will be released on February 1. It contains the title track in a radio and extended version, the B-side "Beautiful World" and the "Feel the Silence" video.

Elegant Machinery is the third Swedish act to be released by Out of Line, after Spetsnaz and Ashbury Heights. However, the growing label lacks decent distribution and marketing in these bands' home country.

Scandinavia 2008: a festival battle scene

Jan 4, 2008 | By: Mikael Kahrle (Gothenburg, Sweden)

It seems the legendary Hultsfred Festival in Sweden is in for some tough competition as EMA Telstar (owned by Live Nation) and Luger plan a Stockholm fest during Hultsfred (June 12). The new event has the preliminary name Way out East, after the sister festival in Gothenburg Way out West (August 7-9). EMA Telstar has been a Hultsfred partner up until now.

We have previously reported about another date clash, when Roskilde, Arvika and Quart aim at the same time frame the first weekend of July. There is also a long list of other Scandinavian festivals and tours for the summer of 2008.

In a time when record sales drops and live events grow more important for the artists and industry, it remains to be seen just how much people are willing to spend on festivals and concerts. In the increased competition there is a risk that most festivals will lose.
