23 000 attended successful M'era Luna

August 19, 2008 | By: Mikael Kahrle (Gothenburg)

Dark at night.

Release is back from Hildesheim's M'era Luna on August 9-10 and we can look back at a great festival.

With 23 000 visitors in a good mood and few, if any, incidents, the annual gathering has already initiated preparations for next year's tenth anniversary. Everyone is invited to send in their live act votes. At the same time you compete for 5x2 tickets and 50 CD packages.

- We are pleased to see that according to the number of visitors, the ninth M'era Luna showed that the festival is one of the most important gothic events in Europe, organiser Folkert Koopmans says.

He hopes for more foreign visitors next year and promises to improve the sanitation facilities.

After being to numerous muddy festivals throughout the years (Roskilde, Arvika, Hultsfred, Eurorock etc), I must say this airport-turned-festival area handled Sunday's vast amounts of rain quite well.

Rain can't stop M'era Luna from being something of a huge fashion show and the majority of the visitors dress up to extremes regardless. A big part of the festival area is a market with endless stands for clothes, jewelry, records - even gothic home decoration. Only in Germany.

Even close to the stage during EBM concert frenzy, people go to great lengths to avoid annoying anyone while dancing or passing through the crowds. "Entschuldigung" can be heard everywhere. And even the coolest of bands bow deeply after their performances. Only in Germany.

Gabi Delgado and Robert Görl reunited on stage and went all old-school during a minimalistic concert where, at times, one could only hear Gabi's shouting and Robert's drumming in the old hangar where they played. Germans from the days of old showed me there is actually a special "Der Mussolini" dance routine.

Mexico's Hocico stood out from the EBM pack by adding three fully dressed-up indians to their show.

VNV Nation's main stage concert was one of the most popular amongst the visitors and Ronan Harris performed a ballad entirely on his own, just singing and playing the keyboard, while sitting. Atmospheric Gothic legends Fields of the Nephilim closed M'era Luna around ten pm on Sunday.
