The German duo Dakar & Grinser seems to be on an admirable mission: to try to
put the sex back in electronic body music. A track like "Take Me Naked" may not
be very sophisticated, but it recalls the perverted glory of classical DAF tracks
like "Mein Herz macht bum" and "Sex unter Wasser", and that in itself is enough
to make them feel like an important force in a time when EBM has just felt unsexy
and castrated for far too long.
But there's another side to Dakar & Grinser as well. Their techno infested take
on body mutates into monotonous instrumentals way too often, and the awkward cover
of the Stooges' "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog" feels very clumsy and shy compared to
the desperately sexual original.
Despite this, I hope Dakar & Grinser will keep their sex fantasies burning. The
world needs them.
