Some
of the excitement is missing this time, isn't it? We've all had the opportunity
to hear the new Depeche Mode material for quite some time
now. Especially "Dream on".
The first single off "Exciter" continues to grow every time
I hear it. Still, after dozens of times. At first, frankly, I wondered
what the hell they were doing, but you need to give "Dream on"
some time. Listening to it in headphones became the turning point
for me, personally. It wasn't until then I discovered the fantastic
finesse in the music buzzing behind Dave's potent vocals. The acoustic
guitar is backed by incredibly built electronic twists and skittering,
synthetic drums.
Having heard a handful of tracks from "Exciter", I doubt "Dream
on" will be my favourite from the album, but it will most certainly
rank among the top five, with its somewhat unusual instrumentation
frame and emotional chorus lines. It may not be an obvious single choice,
though.
As usual, a Depeche Mode single comes in several different versions. My
review copy of the radio single only held the radio version and the "Bushwacka
Tough Guy Mix". The maxi single also offers "Dream on" and includes two versions of the album song "Easy
Tiger". The limited edtition maxi single contains remixes only. These and others can be found three 12".
Dave, Martin and Andy have succeeded in doing what I, at times, doubted
they would be able to repeat. They've managed to create something brand
new with that genius, unique Depeche Mode touch.
It's Spring, "Exciter" will see daylight in a few weeks. Say
it with me: Euphoria!
