DEPECHE MODE
FREELOVE
SINGLE MUTE, PLAYGROUND RELEASE: NOVEMBER 5, 2001 REVIEW: NOVEMBER 15, 2001

Flood's take on the emotional "Freelove" provides a more distinct beat and what feels like a significant tempo raise. I'm glad "Freelove" made it to a single, as it is a personal favourite of mine, from a great, but in my eyes somewhat restrained album. As has proven to be customary with Depeche Mode singles nowadays, "Freelove" comes in several versions, the common one (which is the basis of this review), a limited remix edition and now also as a DVD single with both visual and audio tracks included.
The extra track, "Zenstation", is included in two versions on the standard single, and it is a typical Depeche B-side instrumental. Martin is "ahh-ing" and "ohh-ing" over buzzes and rhythms taking turns, being both introvert and accessible. The remixed version of this track is by far the better one, with frames of techno and that certain Kraftwerkian sound sometimes thrown in for good measure.
Buy "Freelove" for the great Flood single version and a remixed instrumental actually worth your time.
