EDGE OF DAWN
ANYTHING THAT GETS YOU THROUGH THE NIGHT
ALBUM DEPENDENT RELEASE: MAY 21, 2010 REVIEW: JUNE 14, 2010

I don't know when and why, but it seems somehow the appreciation for intelligent electropop has diminished. The debut album from Edge of Dawn (Frank Spinath of Seabound and Mario Schumacher) was a superb slew of songs ranging from thoughtful to in-your-face, held together through a strong link of intelligence and quality.

"Anything That Gets You Through the Night" walks the same path as 2007's "Enjoy the Fall" and does so effortlessly. Album opener "Beyond the Gate", with Iris's Reagan Jones on verse vocals, is one of my favourite pieces 2010 so far. It's cool, yet warm - dark, yet accessible. Perfection.

The sound of the album is mainly contemporary, far away from much of the current retro trend, making Edge of Dawn interesting not only for synthpop or EBM fans, but also techno freaks may get a kick out of this gem. Spinath's classy vocals and Schumacher's clever songwriting make them a winning team, much like Seabound whose sound borders that of Edge of Dawn.

Maybe not an album for the summer barbecue parties, but definitely for all other occasions.
