EXPANSION UNION
WORLD WIDE
FUNK
ALBUM WAX TRAX! RELEASE: WINTER, 1999 REVIEW: DECEMBER 16, 1999
It’s all a mystery to me, this
particular style of music. It’s a funky, beat dominated, sampled mixture. Electronica,
partly disguised as hip hop, funk or plain old break dance. "World Wide
Funk" contains no less than 15 tracks and 67 minutes, and I actually
considered not listening to the entire album before reviewing it. Sure, every
album deserves a decent chance, but Expansion Union really tested my patience.
It took some time, I’ll admit that,
but now I unwillingly enjoy an occasional "World Wide Funk" track while
dancing or just reading the paper. The boogie and slightly techno influenced
funk-electronica has a tendency to cling to my ears, whether I like it or not.
It’s enough contagious to make it from my initial grade of two to a four, but often
it’s just a matter of minutes before Expansion Union will tire me out.
