THE FALL
THE UNUTTERABLE
ALBUM EAGLE ROCK RELEASE: NOVEMBER 6, 2000 REVIEW: DECEMBER 4, 2000

Mark E Smith is one of the most persistent and credible characters that still hangs around from the punk era. For over two decades, he has led his band The Fall through countless incarnations and an immense discography.
With the new Fall album "The Unutterable", Smith once again manages to reinvent the band. It ties together the trademark rockabilly punk with seriously original production touches, from warped takes on techno to sinister dub. "Dr Buck's Letter" has a grinding organ groove. In "Way Round", Smith spits venom at the torment of roundabouts over an overheated synth bass that sounds like The Chemical Brothers on PCP. Combined with the half-spoken slur that is Mark E Smith's singing voice, it makes for a truly remarkable album.
