GRIDLOCK
FORMLESS
ALBUM HYMEN RELEASE: NOVEMBER 3, 2003 REVIEW: DECEMBER 9, 2003

Ironically titled, ”Formless” is not as formless as some electronica can be. Instead, Gridlock empowers their music with musicality and skill, leaving most other laptop artists way behind. Describing their music is hard, but imagine ambient and dramatic chords over slow, distorted, cut up and tweaked beats, forming a fantastic listening experience. Sometimes they move into breakbeat territory, but variation is always good.
Admittedly, they haven’t moved on very much from their last and actually slightly better album “Trace”, but they have such a unique style, I'm fine with it.
This is perhaps not an album to listen to over and over again (even if I do...), but if you turn the lights down, and the volume up, you’re in for a treat.
