MIND.IN.A.BOX
DREAMWEB
ALBUM DEPENDENT, METROPOLIS RELEASE: MAY 30, 2005 (EUROPE), JUNE 7 (USA) REVIEW: JUNE 27, 2005

The duo who stormed the Deutsche Alternative Charts last year are back with their new album "Dreamweb". It feels as though this one was done concurrently with their debut "Lost Alone" because the sound is almost exactly the same. The atmospheres are comparable and the lyrics once again are rooted in quasi-amnesia. I'd suggest Markus Hadwiger take the time to purchase an English pronunciation guide. It might help make his words not sound quite so silly.

Yes, the vocoders abound once more on this album but I feel it does serve the overall sound well. Distinct personas are created via the expert usage of this technology. Believe me, Mind.in.a.box are all about technology. I've not heard such an alienated dark electro act in a long long time. They remind me at times of Evil's Toy (especially their lead-in single "Certainty") and also with their proclivity for tempo changes they harken back to Dance or Die, personal heroes of mine.

Mind.in.a.box have their sound down pat, whether or not they can move beyond the safety of it remains to be seen. Overall "Dreamweb" has a bit of a looser, dirtier sound to it. Pop music, these boys ain't.
