MOBY
PLAY
ALBUM MUTE RELEASE: MAY 17/JUNE 1, 1999 REVIEW: MAY 22, 1999
At the end of his impressive journey from frantic dance music through
aggressive punk rock and serene ambient sounds, Moby lands somewhere between
all of his previous projects on his new album.
"Play" consists partly of tracks created around samples from
blues recordings from the 1920:s, partly of tracks featuring vocals by Moby
himself, and finally of instrumental, dreamy soundscapes.
Moby's musical diversity is impressive and he manages to tie the different
styles together to form a concise record.
Still, the passion I remember from classic Moby tracks such as "Feeling so
Real", has gone missing from his later records, and also from "Play".
Feeling has given way to craftsmanship, for better and for worse.
