MONOLITH
TRIBAL GLOBE
ALBUM DAFT RELEASE: AUTUMN, 1999 REVIEW: NOVEMBER 4, 1999
The ethnically inspired trance beats on "Tribal Globe" must be quite
a change for Eric van Wonterghem, previously known as a member of The Klinik
during their prime. Several musical projects later, his Monolith moniker serves
us techno worlds apart from the worlds of industrialism and electronic body
music.
The titles of
the tracks and the general feel of the album seem to cover the clash or merging
of future technology and science with age old shamanistic practices. The
controlled and rational on one side and the mystical on the other.
Unfortunately
the record is quite low on mysticism. Its beat monotony lacks power and the
soundscapes aren’t very rich. Wonterghem could probably learn a lot from the
warm and full textures on Bill Laswell’s oriental recordings. As it is,
Monolith’s world isn't really inviting. It offers little scenery for your ears.
More spice next time, please.
