NEW
CLEAR SKY
PSYCHODRAMA
ALBUM STREET ROD RELEASE: SPRING,
2000 REVIEW: APRIL 27, 2000
|
I received a mail from New Clear Sky, shortly after I had reviewed the brilliant
Iris album "Disconnect", saying that their music was much more interesting and
innovative. I think not. I would never have thought of comparing these two bands,
but now that they mentioned it, why not?
To avoid misunderstandings, I have to start by saying that Iris is everything
New Clear Sky is not. Iris has an extraordinary sense for composing crisp, first
class synthpop, with one of the strongest voices in the business on top. The Canadian
duo that is New Clear Sky has big problems producing a decent pop song and the
vocalist sound like he'd rather be somewhere else. If I were to put a label on
"Psychodrama" it would say "uninspired". There are fast songs, there are slow,
but none of them convince me. They do have a tendency to bore the hell out of
me, however. Simply because it sounds like nothing else, which it does, it's no
guarantee for quality.
They claim that this, their debut album, is the future sound of synthpop. If it
is, I won't be around to witness it.
