PARADISE LOST
HOST
ALBUM EMI ELECTROLA RELEASE: MAY 24, 1999, JUNE 7, 1999 (UK), APRIL 26, 1999 (JAPAN, WITH BONUS TRACKS) REVIEW: JUNE 11, 1999
"Host" is the British Paradise Lost's seventh album, and first on EMI Electrola. They stay true to the powerful sound they found on
their last album, "One Second". And why shouldn't they? They have developed a magnificent mixture of pop, rock and
electronics. They are on the same quest as, to mention some famous names everybody
can relate to, Depeche Mode, Garbage and sometimes also The Smashing
Pumpkins and U2. Metallica meets Depeche Mode. It's a question of letting
the rock sound of yesterday melting with the electronic sound of today -
with the songwriting in absolute focus.
Many tries, not all succeed. I almost
can't find any flaws or errors - Paradise Lost not only succeed, they
succeed in every possible way.
Even though Paradise Lost of today is quite poppy, they have certainly not
forgot their dark past. The music is still loaded with all sorts of
depressive and melancholic feelings. Great music often is.
And this is definitely great music. One of this year's masterpieces is
here.
