QNTAL
V - SILVER SWAN

ALBUM DRAKKAR/W-WAVE RELEASE: AUGUST 25 (EUROPE), SEPTEMBER 19 (NORTH AMERICA), 2006 REVIEW: SEPTEMBER 14, 2006

For their fifth album, German trio Qntal has decided to turn down the tempo and concentrate on mood. This is a decision which was wise as there really was no way to top "Ozymandias" (review). "Silver Swan" is a more subtle work, an album which unfolds slowly, in grand fashion. More focus has been given to Michael Popp's unusual instrumentation and it makes me wonder if they're even going to bother doing another Estampie record given the way this one sounds. Qntal are ever-evolving in their sound and this has got to be the best example of neo-classical music I've heard since the glory days of Hyperium Records.

Syrah's vocals are, as befits her image, majestic and regal. She's spot on, pulling no punches. The lushness of her voice is also given even more of a chance to carry the songs, "Levis" is an excellent example of this. For his part, Fil provides some truly beautiful electronic backdrops for Popp and Syrah to move within. Those who viewed his contributions strictly as a beat-monger were sorely mistaken. This guy can program. "Silver Swan" is quite polished, it's edginess intact but diffused behind astounding, angelic vocals and sparse, yet effective classical instrumentation.

One more hint for you readers, it is the third track, "Falling Star" which actually makes me feel as though I am in the midst of a most graceful descent from the heavens. Syrah's harmony embodies the wistfulness of years gone by, gazing skyward, in silent awe of the vast ever rolling void. A release as beautiful as this deserves a special edition, of which there is one. Containing a second disc, this version of "Silver Swan" comes in a DVD case and is loaded with impressive extras. Including an additional track found no where else that I'm only going to call sublimely vital.
