SIMPLE MINDS
CRY
ALBUM EAGLE RELEASE: APRIL 1, 2002 REVIEW: MAY 6, 2002

"Cry" is Simple Minds in a tailor made pop suit. They have increased the electronic elements in the music again and their current overall sound borrows quite a bit from U2 during their "Pop" era. A significant, but in no way decisive difference lies in the surprisingly present synths on "Cry". It broadens the spectrum for Jim Kerr and his co-musicians, making way for a few really interesting tracks. Noteworthy is the final track, "Floating World", and instrumental electro-piece written by Vince Clarke. Unexpected, but very good.
The problem with Simple Minds 2002 lies in the similarity between many of the tracks and a somewhat anonymous feel in more than a few songs. At the same time, a handful of the compositions are enchanting, one of which is the Clarke track. "Spaceface" is another sparkling pop hit, as is the single "Cry" and the John Foxx vibes of "Sleeping Girl".
Simple Minds still have a place in the business, and they both sustain and weaken that notion with "Cry". The good moments are very enjoyable while a large part of the album is rather tedious.
But, still, we won't won't won't won't forget about you, Jim.
