YAZOO
ONLY YAZOO – THE BEST OF
COMPILATION ALBUM MUTE, PLAYGROUND RELEASE: SEPTEMBER 6, 1999 REVIEW: NOVEMBER 4, 1999
This is a band that doesn’t need a
presentation. Not only are Yazoo one of the absolute highlights in the world of
synthpop. They are also one of the few bands that still get attention outside
that nowadays pretty isolated world, far from the charts and the mainstream. No
wonder why. The combination of Alison Moyet’s dark, soulful vocals and Vince
Clarke’s excellent, cool electronics can still send shivers down my spine.
After the single release of a slightly updated version of “Only You” on
August 23, this best of-compilation showed up on September 6. A bit strange to
release a compilation out of two albums, but I figure Mute wanted to squeeze in
the very best and focus on one record. “Only Yazoo” offers twelve classic Yazoo
songs, two new mixes and the new version of “Only You” at the end as well as an
informative text about the band.
On November 8 they release a new remix single of “Situation”. The song
was originally the B-side of “Only You” and released as a single of its own not
until 1990. The 11 track CDM includes the 1990 never shown video and the new
“Only You” clip.
Yazoo only existed for a
brief period of time during 1982-83, but the music will stay forever.
