Swedish synthpop trio Saft has gained a certain amount of attention in Sweden for their debut album "Paranoia Erotica". In August it's time for the important follow-up "3-2-1". We called the band to catch up.
International version of the debut
Saft's debut album "Paranoia Erotica" was released in Sweden last year. Earlier this year the time was ripe for a release in Germany and Benelux. For this purpose Saft re-recorded their vocals in English, assuming that the original Swedish version would probably be a bit hard to sell outside of Sweden.
- The foreign release was actually supposed to take place a month earlier, but some record company troubles delayed it a bit, singer Calle Steinmarck tells me on the phone from Stockholm. So we don't really know how the sales are going.
New album and single on their way
Back in Sweden the single "Sitter perfekt" was released in the end of April. In the beginning of August, the new single "Hon går in som en gud och tar över" will show up. Both singles are taken from their forthcoming album "3-2-1", which should be out in the end of August in Sweden.
- The new album will sound much more modern than "Paranoia Erotica", Steinmarck says. It swings much more, and we have been using some loops and stuff like that.
"3-2-1" also sees the guitar enter Saft's music.
- But we won't be using any AC/DC riffs. It's more in the Martin Gore style, just some guitar play blended into the music.
Saft aim high
Saft has previously gained quite a lot of radio play, a trend they hope will continue. They are one of the few Swedish synthpop bands who really aim at big commercial success.
- I guess that it's important not to sell out, Steinmarck says vaguely. It's a thin line to balance. Of course we want a huge hit, but we don't want to end up sounding like Aqua. It's hard to make it sound commercial, and yet do it the right way. But I think we have succeeded on the upcoming album, it sounds really good. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
