Swedish female-fronted pop band Me the Tiger is signed to German EBM band Funker Vogt’s own label Repo, and they delivered quite the concert at the synthpop and EBM festival Electronic Summer in Gothenburg in August. That being said, many of the more dark minded Release-heads might immideately want to dismiss this album, I simply cannot resist the very pure pop quality of it. No, it is not even close to groundbreaking – we have heard this kind of electronic pop a billion times before. The twist, however, is the actual craftmanship: This bunch know how to create pop tunes. And if you know how to keep the tension between melodic content, hooks and fx – you do get away with it.
I guess one could argue that the production feels a bit too much 2000 at times, giving me flashbacks to artists like e.g. Kosheen and Shiny Toy Guns. Probably this factor will keep ”Vitrolic” from being accepted by the mainstram audience to any larger extent. Too bad, since I personally prefer this album to any over standardized fake retro product.
